Description
Swimming Pool Operators CD self-study course
Location Specifics
The American Lifeguard Association offers an approved self-study training program that is on CD-ROM for obtaining a 3-year Swimming Pool Operators permit within the City of Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax County. It is also accepted by Loudoun County, Prince Williams County, District of Columbia and the entire state of Maryland as an approved course to obtain their PO permits.
Our approved self-study CD ROM swimming pool operators course may be started and completed at your convenience. Cost for the course is $225.00, and this includes the fee for the final exam for the CD ROM course, which may be taken any weekday from 8:30am to 5pm at our headquarters in Tysons Corner. It will be necessary for you to return the CD when you come to take the exam, as proof that you took the approved CD ROM course, and so we may also waiver the examination fee.
The CD-ROM is an excellent and innovative tool for training new swimming pool operators and a good review for experienced individuals. The 37 lessons include more than 100 videos, computer animations, and detailed 3-D graphics, 470 photos, interactive problem-solving exercises and quizzes along with up-to-date links to the CDC Healthy Swimming Web site for additional information and to keep the training material current with the latest information on recreational water illness prevention and safety.
Course content includes Introduction (historical, modern, public health issues) Pool design (safety design, construction standards, calculations of volume, recirculation, filtration, construction extras) Operation (certified pool operators, chemistry record keeping, equipment, troubleshooting) Other pool types (wading pools, spa pools, water recreation attractions) Safety (entrapment, the pool deck, inside the pool, safety equipment, CPR, chemical storage, lifeguards and instructors) Pool chemistry (the basics, the periodic table, chemical properties of water, the halogens in water, the chemistry of chlorine in water, shocking the pool, pH, other testing parameters) Pool Forms Inspections (conducting inspections, inspector requirements, enforcement) Code Enforcement.
EXAM LOCATIONS AND TIMES:
Once you have reviewed the CD-ROM course you may take the required exam any weekday at our national headquarters, and take the 50 question multiple choice answer exam. The exam will take about an hour and the exam may be taken anytime Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. We ask that you show up no later then 4pm, to allow to take the exam and for us to process your certification which successful students will receive prior to leaving. The exam is to be taken closed book, with no access or reference to student notes. However, the student may bring a calculator for use with math portions of the exam. Our headquarters is located at 8300 Boone Blvd 5th floor, Vienna VA 22182.
ADDITIONAL WEEKEND LOCATIONS AND TIMES:
Starting in May and running through the end of June we will be offering additional testing times at our office on Saturdays, except on Memorial Day weekend. The start times of the Saturday exams are noon, 2pm and 4pm. Students will need to show up at any of start times listed above, and will be met at our building's main downstairs lobby to be brought up onto our floor, since the building is secured on weekends.
It will be necessary to bring proper proof of ID such as a driver's license, school ID or similar photo ID. You must be 16 years of age or older to take the final exam. You will need to bring back the CD and return it when you come for your exam, as proof of completion of enrollment into the program, and so we may waiver the $75.00 exam fee. There may be an additional $75.00 fee if you would like to apply for the 3 year swimming pool operator's certificate (permit) that is valid for Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria at that same time when you come to take you final exam. Otherwise, there are no additional fees charged and you will receive documentation prior to leaving, to take to the appropriate health department locations such as Arlington County, Loudoun County, Prince County, Montgomery County, Prince Georges County and all other areas in throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia to apply for their individual PO permits.
If you fail to pass with a 70 or higher you may schedule to retake the exam anytime in the future at a fee of $75.00. Participants can only take the exam once each day, but may return the very next day or anytime in the future to retake the exam. You will be notified of your exam results the same day you take the exam. A certificate will be issued to you upon successful completion and is valid for a period of 3 years. Since the testing will be done at our national headquarters' executive building, we ask that you come in casual business attire. Please no swim wear or shorts.
